The second nakshatra extends from 13° 20' to 26° 40' (Aries) and is symbolized by the female generative organ. It has less reference to sex than to other concepts. The symbol suggests that this nakshatra is concerned with the preservative principle in nature; it also serves as a link between the Primeval Source and the manifested event. Bharani represents the bridge between father and offspring. The creative seed passes through it, nourishing it, yielding the final fruit of human birth. The presiding deity of the asterism is Yama, the god of death, who rules over souls in the state between incarnations. This nakshatra's role is the preservation and release of the Golden Egg (Hiranyagarbha). Working primarily under the rajas or activity principle, it guides the soul in materialistic as well as spiritual growth, but its impulse being artha or meaningful action, the soul wants to achieve results in both worlds. This nakshatra can a deep urge to investigate occult knowledge, while on the materialistic side it may impart an excessive desire for sexual indulgence.
Venus is the planetary lord. providing affinity with both extremes, but the four quarters of the asterism governed by the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars respectively. The overall influence of Bharani is sensitivity and sociability along with an acute sense of beauty and comfort, but in its various phases there may be egotism, activity, mentation, dedication and social leadership. Bharani is the productive zone of Aries where originality and impulsiveness are much in evidence.
