GEMINI (Mithuna) (60°00' - 90°00')

Gemini, known as Mithuna in Vedic Astrology, organizes and brings coherence to the creative potential stimulated by Taurus. It symbolizes the emergence of duality and separation, represented by the sense of 'I am.' The mind-principle in Gemini operates under conditions of duality, expressing inner and outer consciousness, and contains the polarisation of Spirit and Matter.

Governed by Mercury, Gemini requires an expansive, airy expanse for its expression, associated with the Vedic deity Pavana (Vayu), the wind-god. Pavana, meaning 'a sieve' or 'a strainer,' signifies the separation of outer or physical intelligence from inner consciousness. Gemini leads to differentiation, polarisation, and the destruction of the unity of egos, resulting in contrarieties such as male and female, life and death, and awakening and sleep.

Mercury's creative influence in Gemini fosters intelligence, influencing the realignment of mental substance and enabling the production of forms on the objective plane. The differentiation of sexes and the evolution of the intellectual principle characterize the Gemini stage, leading to physiological and psychological transformations.

The Gemini impulse, marked by the marriage of Mercury with the mystical Ila, reveals the dual or polarised qualities of the planetary influence. This stage introduces diverse psychological faculties, preparing egos to face the challenges of their evolutionary journey. The Gemini phase represents the emergence of dual streams of consciousness—inner and spiritual, veiled and unable to manifest, and physical and active on the terrestrial plane.

During the Gemini phase, egos developed animal instincts, confronting temptations as their evolutionary impetus. The division of sexes, changing modes of procreation, and the arousal of human intellect intensified the duality within Gemini. The number 2, characterizing Gemini, signifies the emergence of duality, leading to numerous complications in the structure of the thinking network. The three asterisms—two quarters of Mrigashirsa, the whole of Ardra, and three quarters of Punarvasu—cover a wide range of transformations, contributing to the growing complications of human life.
