ASHWINI

The first lunar mansion extends from 0° to 13° 20' along the ecliptic, (i.e., 0° to 13° 20' Aries) and represents the mystic process of activating primeval energy in its latency. Symbolized by the head of a horse, it stands for power and beauty, Its pulsation is rhythmical. Its deities are the Ashwini Kumars who had the capability of bestowing youth to the decrepit sage Chyavan and providing life force to the tree burnt by the poison of the great serpent Takshat. The first nakshatra imparts great healing touch, regenerative potential, physical power and stamina. It also gives a capacity for leadership and a thirst for sensation.

Ashwini is motivated by rajas or the activity principle, and has dharma or righteousness as its basic direction. Mysterious Ketu, the descending node of the Moon, is its ruling planet, but its four parts are governed by Mars, Venus, Mercury and the Moon consecutively. Thus, though its basic planetary affinity lies in abstract conceptualization, the different phases of its growth and unfoldment can respond favorably to all other evolutionary impulses connected with mental and physical sensitivity and sociability.
