Jyeshta is ruled by Indra, the ruler of the Gods. This is the 18th nakshatra of the zodiac, spanning form 16°-20' to 30°-00' in the sign of Scorpio.  It has the power to rise or defeat, and gain courage in battle (arohana shakti). Its basis above is attack and its basis below is defense. The result of these three is that one becomes a hero.

Jyeshta means the eldest one, the senior most, the chief one, more excellent than, preferred one or someone or something foremost glorious.

Jyeshta allows us to reach the peak of our personal powers but it requires great courage and effort. It shows karmic battles that require our complete energization in order to overcome. Indra is the king of the Gods who must eventually alone and single handed defeat the dragon, the most fearful of serpents. Though his position looks hopeless, he wins by courage and devious, not by strength of arms.
