Krittika is ruled by Agni, the God of Fire. This is the 3rd nakshatra of the zodiac, spanning 26°-40' in Aries to 10°-00' in Taurus. Kritikka is considered the nakshatra where power is born. This is the birth star of Moon.

It has the power to burn (dahana shakti). Its basis above is heat and below is light. The result of these three is burning or purification.

Mythology describes Krittika as the foster mother of Kartik devata who is beautiful in appearance and an able commander in a battle. Krittika is also known as the "Star of Fire" and is related to a director, fighter, foster mother, luster, and glow of power, physical and creative force.

Krittika Nakshatra burns up negativity, purifies what is mixed, and cooks or prepares that which is not yet ripe. Agni is mainly the God of the sacred fire, so purification is perhaps the governing action, not destruction. Agni is also the fire that cooks our food and so there is a nourishing side to its effects as well. This fire has a childlike nature.
