Punarvasu is ruled by Aditi, the Great Mother Goddess. Its power is the ability to gain wealth or substance (vasutva prapana shakti). This is the seventh nakshatra of the zodiac, spanning from 20°-00' in Gemini (Taurus) to 3°-20' in Karaka(Cancer).

Its basis above is the wind or air. Its basis below is wetness or rain. These three bring about the revival of the plants.

The word Punarvasu is derived from Puna+Vasu, which means return, renewal, restoration or repetition.
